The 80's. Quite possibly the worst decade ever for hair, fashion and music (with the exception of some classics). The world was in an uncertain place in those days; mass unemployment, the cold war, shoulder pads....sad times. Well, not for those of us lucky enough to have grown up in the 80's. We were young enough to avoid all of that gloom and embarrassment and enjoy the best which the 80's had to offer; board games! Many, us included, get nothing short of nostalgic when we reminisce of all those hours we spent, come rain or shine, playing the kind of games which have never been topped to this day. The shear variety of games was stunning and there was always something new coming out which was just as good as the last. Everyone will inevitably have fond memories of different games but I’m sure we can cover a few here today that many of you will recognise.
Everyone who thinks back to those days will be able to remember a favourite. We have our own (and we even have some of the games still). Our personal favourite 80's board game goes by the name of 'Hero Quest'. It, like all the greatest things from the 80's, has its roots in fantasy. It allows you to play in a sword and sorcery style story where one person plays as the evil side while 1-4 people play as the good guys. It's set in a dungeon and it's turn-based in that you can move and attack once in a turn and then it's the evil player's turn. This is one of the 80's board games that we still personally have and we even got it out about a week ago and started playing it again. Ah, the fond memories that came while we played. It even inspired us to write this review on 80's board games. We were going to just do it about Hero Quest but we decided that there are too many greats to give this individual game our full attention. Below is a list of some of our personal favourite board games from the 80's.
- Hero Quest
- Mouse Trap
- Cluedo ('Clue' in America)
- Space Crusade
- Ker-Plunk
- Stratego
- Atmosphere
- Dungeons And Dragons
- Guess Who?
- Hungry Hippos
So what makes 80's board games so much fun? It's true, the video games of today could barely have been imagined at the time and they're an unparalleled experience. Nevertheless, 80's board games are in a league of their own. The ingenuity of the way the games could unfold is something which the standards of today’s board games have never yet reached. Maybe it's the existence of modern video games which causes less board games to be produced. As a result, this would mean that there's less opportunity for a great board game to come along. In all honesty, we don't really mind. This way, 80's board games can be remembered in this fond way and not be clouded by anything more modern that comes along and tries to steal this glory that so many of us see in the old games. A lot of the games from the 80's are no longer in production and this inevitably means that, one day, when the one's we've kept so long have been damaged beyond playability, the 80's board games will be gone forever. The answer to this problem? Play them now while you can. You'll regret it when you're older and they're all just a distant memory. If you haven't got any left from then, fear not; eBay is a great place to find all of the great old 80's board games. Get yourself there at some point and see what games you can get. Before you know it, you'll be playing things which you last played as a child and you'll feel like you've gone back in time. It's an excellent feeling and something that will keep you feeling nostalgic for a long time to come.
